My Blog

This Blog started in Antarctica where I was a Marine Scientist for 18 months. Over the last 9 years, it has followed my progression into a Professional Marine Scientist, Diver and Skipper. Now I am a Freelance Marine Scientist, and director of my own company and offer my services of diving, skippering, deckhand and Open Water swim coaching. When not working I enjoy going on remote adventures mountain biking, climbing and freediving. Read here for my random stories of adventure and science!

"Imagine an underwater world of vibrant pink, a "living gravel' that's thousands of years old and teeming with life. This is maerl, an unsung hero of our oceans, quietly working to combat climate change and support biodiversity. But this ancient ecosystem is facing a modern crisis. Episode 14: Pollution in Pristine Seas with Saz Reed

Our polar regions are often considered to be pristine untouched waters, largely due their remoteness and lack of civilization, yet both the Arctic and Antarctica are subject to local pollution from tourism, fishing and research activities. On today’s episode, we sit down with Sarah Reed, ships ops manager and technician at the Scottish Association for Marine Science, to chat about her recent paper on microplastics in marine sediments near Rothera Research Station, Antarctica.

Our Earth Podcast

“Our Earth shares research stories, ongoing work and environmental conversations with you. Time to hear perspectives from the researchers, scientists and people working with our environment about life on earth.”

Elyssa Quinton’s new blog, “Hey ocean loverz, I am so excited to introduce the first in our conversation series, Saz Reed. Saz and I studied with each other at university and I have admired her from a far ever since!  After starting as a tug pilot at Lasham Gliding Club, she spent time diving and conducting research in Antarctica as a marine assistant. Continuing on after as an Arctic research technician and ship operations manager, she now leads her own business, Leven Environmental Ltd. Saz is a professional skipper, diver, and open water swim coach, and is also passionate about helping others build their skills and confidence while making waves in marine science and environmental management.”

Podcast with Lizzie Moult on Choosing Change

"I think to cultivate that mindset, you first need to acknowledge it, or have someone else acknowledge it for you. So then you start to acknowledge it. So and I think once you have acknowledged it, for me, it's turning to paper, and working out what's wrong, and how you can get that mindset back on track." - Saz Reed
